Spotless (ASX:SPO) is a leading provider of integrated facilities services with clients across Australia and New Zealand. Whether it be providing critical security for patients and clinical staff at hospitals, preparing nutritious meals at schools, delivering the optimum air-conditioned climate at an airport, maintaining public housing that accommodates tens of thousands of people, laundering uniforms for factory workers, or making sure the elderly have clean rooms in an aged care residence, Spotless can take care of it.

One of Spotless’ key customers in the cleaning sector is Victoria’s primary metropolitan, regional and airport gateway and the busiest station in Melbourne’s public transport network. It provides a world class public transport interchange, with rail connections to regional Victorian centers and facilities for coach passengers and the gateway to the Docklands precinct and Etihad Stadium.

In 2016, and as part of a commitment to continuous improvement, the Spotless management team identified an opportunity to use the Lighthouse workforce management platform and Bluetooth beacons to improve cleaning service delivery and associated performance reporting. Since implementation, Lighthouse has provided greater transparency around service delivery, improved compliance and quality, and has eliminated inefficient paper-based processes and record keeping.


Spotless had the following objectives in mind when implementing Lighthouse:

  1. To provide a solution that empowers employees to be more effective at their job
  2. To improve real-time and historical visibility of cleaning service and compliance
  3. To use mobile technology to better manage scheduled and unscheduled cleaning activity
  4. To improve response and resolution times for reported cleaning issues
  5. To eliminate inefficient paper based records and centralize reporting Activity Feed

Solution Overview

The solution is comprised of the following key elements;

  1. Network of 120 Bluetooth beacons deployed through the station precinct
  2. Employee mobile app to record cleaning services, manage tasks, report issues, complete inspections and communicate with employees and managers
  3. Web-based reporting to monitor service delivery and improve performance over time
How Works

What are beacons?

Beacons are small battery powered IoT devices that broadcast signals using Bluetooth Low Energy. Mobile apps installed on a smartphone can listen for signals from beacons placed in the physical world, like a housing estate. The beacons allow the mobile app to understand exactly where it is, trigger relevant workflows, and collect data for reporting purposes.
